This striking circa 1920 bronze sculpture captures a dramatic and dynamic Western scene, rendered with vivid storytelling and sculptural energy. The subject depicts a Native American warrior mounted on a rearing horse, his body twisted in motion as he raises a weapon overhead, suggesting a moment of action or pursuit. Clinging to the side of the horse is a second mountain lion figure, creating a powerful sense of tension and narrative—an evocative snapshot of movement, conflict, and survival on the frontier.
The composition is particularly compelling for its sense of motion: the horse is sculpted mid-stride, with lifted forelegs and an arched neck, conveying speed and urgency. The rider’s posture—leaning forward while simultaneously raising his arm—adds to the kinetic quality of the piece. The figures are anatomically expressive rather than strictly academic, aligning with early 20th-century interpretations of Western subjects that emphasized drama and storytelling over strict realism. Executed in bronze with cold-painted details, the sculpture retains traces of its original polychrome surface, adding depth and visual contrast to the figures. Subtle remnants of pigment—particularly in the headdress and garment—enhance the narrative and provide a glimpse into the original decorative intent. The surface shows a rich, aged patina, with warm brown tones complemented by darker accents in the recesses, highlighting the sculptural modeling.
Measuring 5.5 inches deep, 6.25 inches wide, and 7 inches high, and weighing approximately 5 pounds, this sculpture has a satisfying presence despite its modest scale. The piece is signed “Rodgers,” and is mounted on a substantial marble base that provides both visual balance and a refined presentation. The clean lines and natural veining of the marble contrast beautifully with the textured bronze above, elevating the sculpture into a display-ready object suitable for a desk, shelf, or cabinet. Good antique condition with light surface wear. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
It is an excellent example of early 20th-century Western figural art, blending narrative intensity, decorative appeal, and period craftsmanship into a compelling collectible piece.
