The work is a modernist reinterpretation of the traditional nativity iconography. The composition is vertically structured, utilizing a geometrized and abstracted visual language characteristic of the renewal of sacred art in the mid-20th century.
The subjects (The Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, and the Christ Child) are reduced to essential forms, defined by thick, black outlines. This cloisonné technique evokes both medieval stained glass and the expressive style of artists like Georges Rouault.
The colors are vibrant and symbolic. The Star of Bethlehem is depicted at the top as a dynamic, fiery red shape, dominating the scene and guiding the viewer's eye toward the central focus of the Holy Child.
The base of the work is a serigraph (screen print), evident in the uniform texture of the color layers. However, the piece possesses a unique character due to manual interventions post-printing: the white dots (representing snow or stars) and the red perimeter border appear to be hand-applied with a brush or pen.
The signature "Eugenio S." was made by hand in paint, integrating organically into the dark background.
The beige (ivory) paper shows a natural patina (slight oxidation) consistent with cellulose-based supports from the 1960s.
This piece is a classic example of post-conciliar religious graphic art. During this era, European artists (primarily from Italian and Spanish schools) moved away from 19th-century realism in favor of a symbolic, abstract language intended to convey spiritual essence through pure form and color.
As this is a work on paper with hand-painted elements, it is best displayed using an acid-free mat (passpartout) and UV-protective glass to prevent pigment fading and to ensure the painted surface does not touch the glass directly.
