Full
Silvin Bronkart (pseudonym of Sylvain Bronckaert, 1915 Liège – 1967)
Untitled Circa 1953
Medium: Charcoal on paper
Dimensions: 65 × 50 cm (sheet)
Signature: Unsigned on the recto (typical of many studio works from this period)
Inscriptions on the verso: Handwritten annotations by the artist including studio marks and orientation indications.
Condition: Excellent overall. The sheet has remained flat with rich, velvety blacks and clean whites. Minor period traces are present, notably small pin holes at the corners (typical of works pinned in the studio) as well as very light handling marks. These have no visual impact on the composition. No tears, creases, foxing or yellowing.
Framing: Sold unframed
Provenance: Directly from the artist’s family (the artist’s daughter).
Created around 1953, this large charcoal drawing showcases Silvin Bronkart’s refined geometric-abstract style from the early 1950s. A key figure of the post-war Liège avant-garde and co-founder of the Réalité-Cobra group alongside Pol Bury, Georges Collignon and Léopold Plomteux, Bronkart here builds a powerful composition with sharp angular forms, intersecting planes and strong vertical emphasis.
Deep, velvety blacks contrast dramatically with luminous white areas, creating a dramatic play of light and shadow. The structured yet dynamic arrangement of lines and geometric shapes gives the work a strong architectural presence while maintaining a sense of movement and spatial tension. The vigorous charcoal application reveals Bronkart’s mastery of tonal range and precise shading.
The generous format (65 × 50 cm) enhances the monumental character of the piece, making it particularly impactful when displayed. This work perfectly illustrates the balance between constructivist rigour and expressive gesture that characterises Bronkart’s finest drawings from this period.
Positioning
Trained at the Institut Saint-Luc in Liège, Silvin Bronkart maintained a selective output focused on drawing and graphic experimentation. His charcoal works from the early 1950s, blending CoBrA energy with personal geometric abstraction, are highly regarded and appear in quality private collections.
This untitled drawing from circa 1953 is a fine and elegant example of his dynamic period — a sophisticated, rhythmic work with strong graphic presence, ideal for a modern interior or a collection of post-war Belgian abstract art. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
