Jacopo ligozzi (verona 1547 - florence 1627) workshop of
ecce homo
oil on octagonal canvas
118 x 94 cm. - framed 128 x 105 cm.
ecce homo, the subject of our powerful canvas, is the gospel episode in which jesus, awaiting his condemnation and after the flagellation, is presented to the crowd by the roman governor pontius pilate, here portrayed at his side wearing an oriental-style turban.
the canvas immortalizes the moment when the savior accepts his final fate: his face reflects not only his humiliation but also a moment of profound introspection and emotion. He is then depicted with a crown of thorns resting on his long hair and stripped of his clothes, with his hands tied and crossed, alluding to his immediate crucifixion on golgotha.
"ecce homo," which literally means "behold the man," was the phrase uttered by pilate himself to refer to the scourged jesus and curry favor with the crowd, knowing they had condemned an innocent man.
to his right, an armored soldier observes jesus with a stern gaze, while the head to christ's left is believed to be that of barabbas, the murderer pilate freed in place of jesus christ during the trial before the crucifixion.
an iconographic curiosity is the soldier's shiny metallic armor, in typical caravaggio style, which contrasts with the vulnerability of christ's bare, wounded skin. We can easily see that this is a seventeenth-century suit of armor, a common anachronism at the time, designed to make the scene more contemporary and engaging for the viewer of the time.
this subject was very popular in the sixteenth century, giving rise to particularly intense creations, capable of moving even those who do not favor subjects with such a strong emotional impact.
in particular, the work in question draws on the famous "ecce homo" by jacopo ligozzi (verona 1547 - florence 1627), a veronese artist active in florence at the medici court, originally held in the agostino giusti collection in verona. The composition reflects his late mannerist style and his almost scientific attention to detail, blending the veronese tradition with a precision typical of northern europe.
this is a very interesting and high-quality work dating to the early 17th century, attributed to a skilled artist from his workshop.
the work was indeed reproduced by the same artist and his workshop in numerous versions, perhaps the most famous of which is that of the alte pinakothek in munich.
the work's success was largely due to the beautiful engravings by raphael sadeler, from 1598, one of which is now in the british museum.
