An exceptional and early Villeroy & Boch Mettlach stoneware spill vase, dating to approximately 1844–1860, featuring a highly detailed trompe l’oeil design modeled as a tightly bundled grouping of cigars.
This rare mid-19th century piece showcases the artistry and innovation of early Mettlach production, with deeply sculpted relief and a rich, naturalistic glaze simulating aged tobacco leaves and cigar tips. A decorative band encircles the bundle, adding to the illusionistic quality of the form.
The underside bears an early crowned eagle “Wappen” mark, consistent with known **Villeroy & Boch Mettlach markings used between 1844 and 1860, placing this example among the earlier and more desirable productions from the factory.
