Cloaked inside and out with a dark brown glaze, this ceramic vessel from the early 19th century was originally used in a Qing-dynasty (1644-1911) kitchen for salt-pickling eggs and other foods. Shaped by hand with pleasing asymmetry, the jar has a squat form with straight sides and angular shoulders textured by vertical fluting. Speckled with imperfections and color variations, the glazed pot exemplifies the timeless appeal of handcrafted pottery.
