This impressive glazed vessel dates to the mid-19th century and was used to store wine and spirits made from rice and other grains. Shaped by hand in Jincheng, Shanxi, the large jar has an elegant, tapered form and is beautifully glazed with neutral earth tones in the manner of cizhou ware.
Abstract botanical motifs decorate the shoulders and sides, loosely painted in brown iron pigments atop a creme-white slip. The sides and neck are banded with concentric lines and borders of freeform brushwork. Now richly aged with deep crazing and marked with imperfections, the sculptural wine jar has only become more beautiful with time.
Restoration to losses to rim.
