This "Untitled" (Assemblage), 1957 by Robert Mallary (1917-1997) comes from Mallary's series of New Mexico Reliefs. Mallary arranged found objects which he covered with polyester resins to create abstract relief sculptures and assemblages. He was an artist interested in new materials and cutting edge technologies that enabled him to be on the forefront art making for his time. He explored how different materials could be used to create a new type of realism. He began using polyester resin in the early 1950's and would mix dirt, straw, wood, gravel and concrete which created 3-dimensional pieces with thick, solid surfaces.
This work was purchased directly from the artist in 1958 and has only had one owner. It is one of Mallary's most complex works and remains timeless in it's composition and execution.
