Provenance: From a private estate in Birmingham, MI. Originally acquired from the J.L. Hudson Gallery in 1972 (see documentation in listing). Dimensions: 26.25”h x 19.25”w x 1.5”d (framed) / 21"h x 13.5"w (painting size). Condition: The surface shows intentional texture, visible brushstrokes, and areas of impasto consistent with Appel’s working method. Karel Appel (1921–2006) was a Dutch painter and sculptor and a founding member of the CoBrA art movement. His work was exhibited internationally and is held in major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou, and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Appel is known for his expressive use of color, spontaneous gesture, and figurative abstraction, and he played a central role in postwar European avant-garde art through his commitment to experimentation and direct, emotionally driven imagery.
