An iconic piece from the post-war reconstruction program, this low oak sideboard is by rené gabriel (1890-1950), a founding figure of french social design. Commissioned by the ministry of reconstruction to create "furniture for disaster victims," rené gabriel designed standardized pieces, manufactured by local artisans, combining functionality with understated elegance. Highly sought after today by collectors of mid-century modern and authentic antiques, these pieces carry a unique history.
materials: oak (solid and veneer).
features: the sideboard offers a tripartite configuration typical of rené gabriel furniture: it opens with two solid doors framing a central column of five drawers. Its slightly flared legs lend lightness and balance to the piece. Inside the cupboards, there are three shelves (of fixed height), two on the left and one on the right.
restoration: this rené gabriel sideboard has undergone extensive restoration. It was first sanded and then treated against wood-boring insects in three stages. It was then sanded again, preserving the wood's natural patina. The drawers were repaired and reinforced. As the doors no longer had locks, magnets were installed to ensure they close properly. Finally, the interiors of the cupboards and drawers were painted in farrow & ball's plummett grey, as were the shelves (which are new).
condition: the piece is solid, stable on its feet, and in good condition after treatment. It still shows visible traces of wood-boring insects (inside).
dimensions: w153.5 x d46.5 x h92 cm.
cupboards: w58 x d40.5 x h75 cm.
drawers: w25 x h11 cm.
