Vally Wieselthier (1895–1945) was among the most important ceramic artists associated with the Wiener Werkstätte, a pioneering force in early modern applied arts. Her work from the period circa 1919–1922 is particularly celebrated for its expressive, sculptural qualities and innovative approach to form.
This example, model 714/1, belongs to this highly creative phase, characterized by bold hand-modeling, architectural compositions, and the integration of figural motifs within functional forms. The use of pierced openwork, polychrome glazing, and applied mask decoration reflects the experimental ceramic language developed at the Wiener Werkstätte during the transition from Vienna Secession to early Art Deco.
Works of this complexity and sculptural presence are increasingly rare on the market and are regarded as among the most distinctive ceramic productions of the Wiener Werkstätte. Minor surface wear and glaze irregularities consistent with age. A small, stable hairline crack to the neck and a discreet professional repair to the top are present; neither affects structural integrity or display. Presents very well overall.
