19th century Hungarian flat top trunk crafted in pine with original hand painted decoration. The surface features a dark navy … Read more 19th century Hungarian flat top trunk crafted in pine with original hand painted decoration. The surface features a dark navy blue background with vibrant floral motifs in red, yellow, blue, white, and green. A name and date of 1883 embellish the front center.
Carved half column details flank the front. A unique feature is the lower drawer, which opens with two brass ring pulls.
The trunk top opens on wrought iron hinges, revealing an interior compartment with a small lidded box to the left for storage of personal items. Side handles allow for easier transportation. The trunk rests on four turned bun feet.
A wax finish has been applied to both the interior and exterior. The trunk has been restored and is strong, stable, and ready to use.
The lower drawer interior shows age-related separation, cracks, and staining. The top shows one long crack along with additional nicks, dings, gouges, and wear to the painted surface. The back and other areas reveal old dried wormhole activity (that is no longer active). The wear and distress seen throughout reflects generations of use and contributes to the character of this example of European folk art craftsmanship.
