finely preserved example of early 20th-century English blue and white pottery, this Staffordshire transferware vase features the celebrated Chung pattern designed by Frederick Rhead for Wood & Sons, Burslem. First introduced in 1914, Chung is regarded as one of the most successful British Chinoiserie ceramic designs of the period. This example dates to the 1930s, identified by the printed Woods Burslem England backstamp bearing the pattern name. Decorated using a traditional transfer-printed technique, the design is rendered in rich Prussian blue on a bright white ceramic ground. The dense surface ornamentation is strongly influenced by Chinese Qing dynasty porcelain, featuring scrolling floral forms, stylized foliage, and rhythmic cloud-like curls. A repeating geometric border at the rim completes the composition and is a defining feature of the Chung pattern and related English Chinoiserie ceramics. The vase has a clean cylindrical form, characteristic of interwar British decorative pottery, and works equally well as a decorative blue and white vase or functional vessel. Its scale and visual weight make it suitable for both traditional and modern interiors. Dimensions: Height: approx. 7.9 inches (20 cm) Diameter: approx. 5.5 inches (14 cm) Condition: Good vintage condition. Structurally sound with no chips or cracks. A small original transfer irregularity is present at the rim, consistent with period manufacturing and typical of early 20th-century English transferware. An increasingly collectible piece of 1930s British pottery, this vase represents an important chapter in the Rhead family’s influential contribution to 20th-century English ceramics and remains highly sought after by collectors of Staffordshire pottery, blue and white ceramics, and Frederick Rhead designs. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
