This attractive pair of Japanese Satsuma vases combines good painting, refined surface detail and the added interest of the Hododa mark. Together the two pieces create a coherent and elegant decorative group, with a stronger presence than unrelated cabinet wares and with clear appeal both to collectors and to those looking for finely worked decorative ceramics.
The painting is of very good quality, with delicate detail throughout. The figures are carefully characterised, the dragon motif is lively and well balanced across the bodies, and the raised moriage work adds texture and depth. The gilding remains pleasing overall and contributes to the warm, luxurious effect that makes this pair so decorative in display.
A major advantage is the Hododa mark, which places the pair within a recognised and commercially desirable Satsuma group. This adds both market strength and collecting interest.
