This engraving was published in London circa 1746–1747 by John and Paul Knapton as part of the celebrated series The Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain, edited by Thomas Birch. This important publication sought to immortalize key figures in British history through a refined combination of portraiture and biography, and Houbraken’s engravings are widely regarded as among the finest portrait prints of the 18th century. The composition presents Tillotson in a dignified oval medallion, rendered with remarkable precision and tonal depth. Houbraken’s masterful line work captures the softness of facial features and the richness of drapery, demonstrating his exceptional control of light and shadow. Below the portrait, an allegorical putto is depicted writing in a large book, symbolizing Tillotson’s intellectual legacy as a theologian and influential preacher. The surrounding decorative elements—flowing drapery, ornamental scrollwork, and classical motifs—enhance the print’s elegant and scholarly character. This engraving exemplifies the height of 18th-century portrait printmaking and remains highly desirable among collectors of British historical figures, as well as interior designers seeking refined, classical imagery. Condition report: Fair to good overall condition for its age. Visible plate mark present. General age toning to the sheet with some scattered foxing and a few small stains in the margins (notably lower left). Minor edge wear consistent with handling. The image itself remains strong and well-preserved with crisp engraving lines. Framing tips: This print displays beautifully with a wide ivory or warm off-white mat and a thin dark walnut or black frame. A classic museum-style presentation enhances the oval composition and decorative lower section. Ideal as a statement piece in a study, library, or traditional interior.
