Both sculptural and decorative, it has the presence of a serious collector’s object while also functioning beautifully as an interior statement piece.

The lid is painted with a highly detailed figural composition representing Rakan, or Buddhist sages, shown with expressive faces, intricate halos and richly articulated robes. The use of layered polychrome enamels and generous gilding gives the scene depth and brilliance, while the dark midnight-blue ground creates a dramatic contrast. Across this surface runs a dense network of delicate gold stippling, producing a refined shimmer that enhances the quality of the piece and reflects the sophistication associated with fine Meiji-period Satsuma wares.

The body of the box is decorated with elegant scrolling foliage and stylised ornamental motifs, giving the object a fully resolved design from every angle. The underside bears the iron-red signature of Tōshōzan (東正山), adding an important workshop identity to the piece.

What makes this example especially appealing is the combination of strong decorative impact and physical substance.
