This Swedish Art Deco smoked glass vase, designed by Edward Hald for Orrefors and produced at the Sandvik branch in 1923, represents an early and formative example of modern Scandinavian glass. Created during a transitional moment between late Jugendstil and emerging Art Deco modernism, the piece reflects Hald’s role in establishing a new visual language within Swedish glassmaking. The vase is formed with a vertically undulating profile, swelling gently at the center and tapering toward a narrow, weighted base. This sculptural approach to form demonstrates a controlled sense of rhythm and proportion, characteristic of Hald’s early work. The silhouette balances organic movement with a developing geometric clarity associated with the period. Executed in smoked brown glass, the surface exhibits strong clarity and depth, with subtle tonal variation under changing light. The piece was likely mold-blown and finished by hand, as indicated by the presence of a ground and polished pontil beneath. This model is documented in the 1923 Orrefors–Sandvik catalogue, and a comparable example is held in the British Museum, supporting its historical and institutional relevance. The vase measures approximately 9.8 inches (25 cm) in height and 5.5 inches (14 cm) in diameter. Condition is very good vintage, with no chips or cracks observed. Light surface wear is present, consistent with age, and the glass retains a strong luster. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
