A large french art deco ceramic sculpture of a koi carp fish, designed by lejan and produced by the faïencerie d’orchies in the 1930s. The form is characterised by smooth, flowing contours and a disciplined modernist silhouette typical of interwar french decorative arts. Modelled in ceramic, the sculpture is finished in an off white ivory craquele glaze, the finely veined surface providing subtle visual texture while maintaining the clarity of the sculptural outline. The stylised treatment of the fins and body creates a sense of movement and balance, reflecting the period’s interest in abstraction drawn from natural forms. The piece is notable for its generous scale, allowing it to function as a strong standalone object, well suited to display on a plinth, console, or mantel. A lightly impressed “lejan” signature is present on the lower fin. Dimensions: width: 40 cm (15.75 in) depth: 13 cm (5.1 in) height: 30 cm (11.8 in) condition: very good condition. No chips, cracks, or visible repairs. The craquelure is consistent with period manufacture and original firing. A refined and sculpturally confident example of 1930s french art deco ceramic sculpture, appealing to collectors of animal forms and interwar french design. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
