Davey. This atmospheric view captures the historic Norman gatehouse, originally constructed around 1068 following the Norman Conquest. The composition presents a quiet approach toward the castle ruins, framed by a modest Georgian building on the left and a walled passage leading the eye toward the imposing arched gateway. The structure, built into the earlier Roman city walls, is rendered with careful attention to texture and architectural detail, emphasizing its age and layered history. Figures along the road add scale and a sense of daily life, while the soft tonal gradations of the aquatint technique create a subtle, almost painterly effect. Rougemont Castle, named for its distinctive red stone, was a key defensive structure in medieval Exeter and played a role in the consolidation of Norman rule in England. By the late 18th century, such ruins became popular subjects within the emerging Picturesque movement, which celebrated decay, irregularity, and the romantic beauty of historic landscapes. This print exemplifies that aesthetic, combining documentary interest with a refined tonal quality that makes it highly decorative. Works by Jukes are particularly appreciated for their atmospheric handling of light and shadow, bridging the gap between topographical accuracy and artistic interpretation. Condition: Good antique condition with even age toning and light scattered foxing. The impression remains clear, with strong tonal quality typical of aquatint prints. Mounted on strong old paper. Framing tips: Ideal for a classic or country house interior, this piece pairs beautifully with a warm cream mount and a dark wood or gilt frame. Its soft tonal palette lends itself well to understated, elegant display. Technique: Aquatint etching Maker: Francis Jukes, after W. Davey, United Kingdom, dated 1794 See less
