Antique cabinet of curiosities beetle plates, jewel & firefly insects, 1893 : this striking set of six victorian natural history beetle plates originates from the celebrated german entomological work käferbuch – naturgeschichte der käfer europas by c. G. Calwer. The plates were published in the expanded fifth edition of 1893, edited by professor dr. G. Jäger and revised by dr. G. Stierlin, and issued in stuttgart by the publisher julius hoffmann. Calwer’s käferbuch became one of the most widely consulted illustrated guides to european beetles during the late nineteenth century and was specifically designed “zum handgebrauche für sammler,” meaning for practical use by collectors and naturalists. The prints present detailed visual surveys of numerous european beetle families, including jewel beetles (buprestidae), click beetles (elateridae), fireflies (lampyridae), soldier beetles (cantharidae), stag beetle relatives, and various wood-boring and bark beetles. Each plate contains a carefully arranged scientific composition of dozens of species, numbered and identified with their latin names beneath the image. The structured layout resembles the drawers of a museum entomology cabinet, reflecting the systematic scientific approach characteristic of nineteenth-century natural history studies. The beetles are rendered with remarkable precision and vibrant color using chromolithography, a sophisticated printing process that allowed printers to reproduce the metallic greens, deep bronzes, reds, and iridescent blues that make many beetles so visually striking. The jewel-like coloration of species such as agrilus, buprestis, and lampyris contrasts beautifully with the darker click beetles and bark beetles illustrated across the plates. This combination of scientific accuracy and aesthetic refinement gives the prints a powerful decorative presence. Beyond their scientific interest, these plates possess strong visual appeal. The orderly arrangements, jewel-toned insects, and delicate scientific engraving create compositions that resemble victorian cabinets of curiosity. When framed together, the prints form a highly decorative natural history display suitable for libraries, studies, offices, or interiors inspired by classical scientific collections. Sets of antique insect plates from nineteenth-century european natural history publications have become increasingly sought after by collectors and interior designers alike. Their structured compositions and rich colors make them ideal for gallery walls, particularly when displayed in grids or rows that echo the organization of historic specimen collections. Note: please note that these prints are originals and not reproductions. They are offered unframed. Condition report: very good antique condition with light age toning and occasional spotting consistent with late nineteenth-century paper. Margins remain generous and the chromolithographic colors are strong and well preserved. Minor handling marks may be present, as expected for plates originally bound in a scientific reference volume. Framing tips: these prints frame beautifully as a coordinated gallery group. Dark walnut, black, or ebonized frames with warm ivory mats complement the antique paper tones and emphasize the jewel-like beetle colors. Displayed in a 2 × 3 grid or in two horizontal rows, they create an elegant museum-style natural history installation. Technique: chromolithograph maker: c. G.
