Antique weevil beetle chromolithographs, curculionidae plates, calwer 1893 : a refined and visually striking set of six late 19th-century natural history plates depicting european weevils and related beetles, drawn from the celebrated entomological work käferbuch – naturgeschichte der käfer europas by german naturalist c. G. Calwer. Published in stuttgart by julius hoffmann in the expanded fifth edition of 1893, and edited by professor dr. G. Jäger with revisions by dr. G. Stierlin, these plates represent one of the most accessible and widely used illustrated guides to european beetles of the period. Designed “zum handgebrauche für sammler” (for practical use by collectors), the work combines scientific rigor with aesthetic appeal. The present plates focus particularly on the diverse and characterful group of weevils (curculionidae), recognizable by their elongated snouts and compact, armored bodies. Each specimen is rendered with remarkable clarity and subtle coloration, arranged in clean, taxonomic grids that reflect 19th-century scientific precision. Among the species illustrated are otiorhynchus, sitones, brachyderes, and hylobius, alongside vividly colored examples such as phyllobius and chlorophanus, known for their green metallic sheen. Also included are patterned and textured forms such as larinus, cleonus, and anthonomus, showcasing the remarkable diversity within this beetle family. The plates highlight differences in body shape, surface texture, and coloration, making them both scientifically informative and visually engaging. The chromolithographic technique brings out a rich palette of earthy browns, olive greens, and subtle metallic tones, with occasional brighter accents. The balanced compositions and repetition of form create a rhythmic, almost graphic quality, making these prints particularly well suited for decorative display. Whether presented as a cohesive set or individually, they offer a sophisticated blend of natural history and design. This set is ideal for collectors of entomological material, as well as for interior designers seeking structured, elegant wall compositions with a scientific narrative. A 2×3 grid presentation enhances their visual impact and reinforces their original purpose as a comparative study series. Condition report: good antique condition with age-related toning and light foxing consistent with late 19th-century paper. Minor edge wear and handling marks visible. Some plates show slight irregularities along the margins from original binding. Colors remain strong and well-preserved. Framing tips: best presented as a unified set in identical frames to emphasize their systematic arrangement. Dark wood or ebonized frames paired with warm white or ivory mats complement the natural tones of the prints. A tight 2×3 grid layout with even spacing creates a clean, architectural wall display. Floating mounts can also work well to highlight the full sheet and its antique character. Note: these prints are original antique chromolithographs and not reproductions. They are offered unframed.
