Antique Architectural Plan of Château de Fontainebleau, Napoleon Residence, Baltard, 1803 This finely executed architectural engraving presents a measured ground plan of the Château de Fontainebleau, one of France’s most historically significant royal and imperial residences. Engraved by the French architect Louis-Pierre Baltard and published in Paris in 1803, the print forms part of the rare Napoleonic-era publication Paris et ses Monuments, mesurés, dessinés et gravés, a work dedicated to documenting France’s most important monuments with scientific precision and artistic clarity. Depicting the palace at the height of Napoleon’s reign, this plan offers a rare architectural view of one of the most important imperial residences of the First Empire. What makes this engraving particularly compelling is its direct connection to the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte. At the time of publication, Fontainebleau functioned as one of Napoleon’s principal imperial residences, where he received dignitaries, governed state affairs, and reshaped the palace to reflect the grandeur of the First Empire. Most notably, it was here in 1814 that Napoleon signed his abdication and delivered his famous farewell to the Imperial Guard in the Cour du Cheval Blanc. This engraving therefore captures the château at a defining historical moment—serving not only as an architectural document but also as a visual record of imperial power at its height. Baltard’s rendering is both precise and elegant, showcasing the full complexity of the château’s layout, including its grand courtyards, formal gardens, galleries, and extensive residential wings. The plan reveals the rational organization of space typical of French royal architecture, with carefully delineated rooms, corridors, and ceremonial axes. The clarity of the linework and the balanced composition demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship achieved through copperplate engraving in the early 19th century. As part of Baltard’s ambitious documentation project, this sheet would have appealed to architects, scholars, and collectors interested in both historical architecture and the political symbolism of France’s great monuments. Today, it offers a rare opportunity to own a piece that bridges architectural refinement and one of Europe’s most dramatic historical narratives. Condition: Good antique condition with light age-related toning, minor spotting, and faint discoloration to the margins. The engraving remains crisp with strong, clear impressions and well-preserved detail. Framing tips: This print lends itself beautifully to a dark walnut or ebonized frame with a generous ivory or off-white mat. The contrast enhances the delicate linework and gives the piece a refined, museum-quality presence suitable for a study, library, or luxury interior setting. Note: This map is an original antique engraving and not a reproduction. It is offered unframed. Frame shown for presentation purposes only.
