G. Calwer. Published in stuttgart by julius hoffmann in the expanded fifth edition of 1893, and edited by professor dr. G. Jäger with revisions by dr. G. Stierlin, these prints belong to one of the most widely used illustrated beetle guides of the period. Intended “zum handgebrauche für sammler,” or for practical use by collectors, calwer’s work successfully combines scientific accuracy with refined chromolithographic color. These plates focus largely on cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles or long-horned wood borers, a group admired for their elongated bodies and distinctive antennae. Among the notable species illustrated are prionus coriarius (the tanner beetle), ergates faber (giant longhorn beetle), aegosoma scabricorne (rough longhorn beetle), and spondylis buprestoides (black timber beetle).
