Antique longhorn beetle chromolithographs, cerambycidae plates, calwer 1893 : a highly decorative set of four late 19th-century natural history plates depicting european longhorn beetles and related species, taken from the celebrated german entomological work käferbuch – naturgeschichte der käfer europas by c. G. Calwer. Published in stuttgart by julius hoffmann in the expanded fifth edition of 1893, and edited by professor dr. G. Jäger with revisions by dr. G. Stierlin, these prints belong to one of the most widely used illustrated beetle guides of the period. Intended “zum handgebrauche für sammler,” or for practical use by collectors, calwer’s work successfully combines scientific accuracy with refined chromolithographic color. These plates focus largely on cerambycidae, commonly known as longhorn beetles or long-horned wood borers, a group admired for their elongated bodies and distinctive antennae. Among the notable species illustrated are prionus coriarius (the tanner beetle), ergates faber (giant longhorn beetle), aegosoma scabricorne (rough longhorn beetle), and spondylis buprestoides (black timber beetle). Also included are rhagium inquisitor (ribbed pine borer), leptura rubra (red longhorn beetle), strangalia quadrifasciata (four-banded longhorn beetle), and clytus arietis (wasp beetle), a species well known for its striking wasp mimicry. Further variety is provided by vividly colored and patterned species such as pachyta quadrimaculata (four-spotted longhorn beetle), callidium violaceum (violet tanbark beetle), molorchus major (slender longhorn beetle), and hylotrupes bajulus (old house borer), a species historically associated with timber structures. Together, these plates offer an excellent visual survey of european wood-boring and flower-visiting beetles, combining scientific taxonomy with decorative elegance. The compositions are beautifully balanced, with each specimen isolated against a pale ground and arranged in orderly rows. The chromolithographic technique produces a rich yet controlled palette of warm browns, olive greens, golden yellows, and deep blacks, with occasional flashes of blue and red. The graceful, sweeping antennae create a sense of movement across the sheets, lending the prints a strong graphic quality that translates exceptionally well into interior settings. Ideal for collectors of natural history and antique scientific illustration, this set also lends itself perfectly to interior design use. Displayed together in a 2×2 arrangement, the prints form a cohesive and visually engaging wall composition that bridges science and decorative art. Condition report: good antique condition with age-related toning and light foxing consistent with late 19th-century paper. Minor edge wear and handling marks visible, with slight irregularities along the margins from original binding. Colors remain strong and well-preserved. Framing tips: best presented as a matched set in identical frames. Dark walnut, stained oak, or ebonized frames paired with warm ivory or off-white mats will enhance the tonal richness of the prints. A tight 2×2 grid arrangement creates a clean, architectural display with strong visual impact. Note: these prints are original antique chromolithographs and not reproductions. They are offered unframed. Technique: chromolithograph maker: c. G. Calwer, germany, published julius hoffmann, stuttgart, 1893 this piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
