The composition presents Belin in a refined bust-length format, dressed in formal European attire, his gaze direct and composed. The restrained yet precise engraving technique captures subtle facial expression and texture, reflecting the academic portrait style of the period. The plate is inscribed “Eustache Belin” and further identified in French at the upper margin, suggesting publication within a larger biographical or historical series. The engraving is after a portrait by Adèle Jarry de Mancy and executed by Savario (or Saverio) Pistolesi, whose work is known for its clarity of line and delicate tonal modeling. Belin’s life story is closely tied to the upheavals of Saint-Domingue (modern-day Haiti) during the late 18th century. Born into slavery, he became known for assisting European colonists during the revolutionary period. In the decades that followed, his actions were recognized in France, where he was awarded the Prix de Vertu by the Académie Française in 1832. This portrait reflects how such figures were commemorated in 19th-century European print culture, offering insight into the narratives and values of the time. Visually, the engraving has a strong graphic presence: the dark, finely worked bust contrasts elegantly against the softly shaded background, while the generous margins enhance its suitability for framing. The sheet retains a visible plate mark, adding to its authenticity as an original impression. This piece will appeal to collectors of Caribbean history, Haitian Revolution material, and early 19th-century portrait engravings, as well as those seeking works with layered historical context. Interior mockups shown are for visual inspiration only and do not represent the exact scale. We do not sell reproductions, only original works of art over 100 years old. Condition: Good antique condition with age-related toning and scattered foxing, more pronounced in the margins. Light edge wear consistent with age. Plate mark visible. Framing tips: Present with a wide off-white or warm ivory mat to balance the margins and highlight the plate impression. A dark wood or ebonized frame will create contrast and a museum-quality presentation. For a softer, historical look, a gilt frame can also complement the period character.
