A powerful and dramatic Baroque etching depicting Jason and the Dragon, created by the celebrated Italian artist Salvator Rosa circa 1663–1664. This striking composition illustrates a rare and evocative episode from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, in which the Greek hero Jason subdues the dragon guarding the Golden Fleece using a magical potion provided by Medea. Rosa captures the moment of intense confrontation with remarkable energy: Jason, partially cloaked and twisting in motion, pours the potion into the dragon’s open jaws as the creature recoils beneath him. The scene is set within a dense, almost oppressive natural environment, with gnarled trees and tangled foliage reinforcing the sense of danger and mythological tension. The composition is dynamic and asymmetrical, characteristic of Rosa’s highly expressive style. Executed in etching with drypoint on laid paper, the work displays Rosa’s distinctive draftsmanship—vigorous, spontaneous, and richly textured. His use of line varies from fine, controlled hatching to more forceful, sketch-like strokes, creating a vivid interplay of light and shadow. This technical approach enhances the emotional intensity of the scene and firmly situates the print within the Baroque tradition, where drama, movement, and psychological depth are central. Salvator Rosa (1615–1673) was one of the most original artists of the Italian Baroque, known for his fascination with wild landscapes, bandits, philosophers, and scenes of magic and mythology. “Jason and the Dragon” ranks among his most important and successful prints, and the composition was later revisited in his painted works. The subject matter—combining heroism, sorcery, and danger—was particularly appealing to 17th-century collectors and continues to resonate with modern audiences. Impressions of this print are held in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art, underscoring its historical and artistic significance.
