This refined print was published in Paris by Firmin-Didot & Cie in the late 19th century as part of a major visual survey of global cultures and historical subjects. The composition presents a rare cross-sectional view of the Sultan’s Harem, revealing the internal structure of a vast multi-level wooden complex. A large central hall is surrounded by galleries and private chambers, connected by open walkways and staircases. The architectural clarity is striking, with carefully rendered beams, balustrades, lattice windows, and decorative panels that reflect the craftsmanship of Ottoman interior design. Numerous small figures animate the space, engaged in daily activities such as conversation, service, and movement between rooms. These details provide both scale and narrative, transforming the print into a vivid glimpse of life within a space historically closed to outsiders. The structured, almost technical perspective enhances the sense of depth and spatial understanding, making this work particularly compelling for those interested in architecture and historical interiors. The image ultimately derives from the work of Antoine Ignace Melling (1763–1831), a French artist and architect who resided in Constantinople for nearly two decades and was invited to work at the Ottoman court under Sultan Selim III. His drawings are renowned for their accuracy and observational quality, distinguishing them from more imaginative “Orientalist” depictions of the period. Executed in fine lithography, the print is characterized by precise linework and balanced tonal shading, giving it a clean, graphic quality that works exceptionally well in both classical and contemporary interiors. It is equally appealing as a decorative piece and as a historical document. Condition: Good antique condition with age-related toning, light foxing, and minor edge wear. Some irregularities along the top margin from original binding. Clean impression with strong detail throughout. Plate marks not applicable due to lithographic process. Framing tips: This print benefits from a wide ivory or warm off-white mat and a thin dark walnut or black frame. Its horizontal format makes it ideal above a desk, console, or sofa, or as part of a curated architectural or travel-themed wall. Note: The interior mockups are for visual inspiration only and do not represent the exact scale. We do not sell reproductions, only original works of art over 100 years old.
