This refined print was published in Paris by Firmin-Didot & Cie in the late 19th century as part of a major visual survey of global cultures and historical subjects. The composition presents a rare cross-sectional view of the Sultan’s Harem, revealing the internal structure of a vast multi-level wooden complex. A large central hall is surrounded by galleries and private chambers, connected by open walkways and staircases.
