These prints belong to a celebrated European series illustrating the dress, hierarchy, and cultural diversity of the Ottoman Empire, created during a period of intense Western fascination with the East. The first figure represents a standard bearer, an important ceremonial and military role within the Ottoman ranks. He is shown holding a richly decorated flag topped with a crescent finial, symbolizing imperial authority and Islamic identity. His attire is elaborate and richly adorned, featuring a long embroidered coat, sash, and fur-lined elements, reflecting both status and the visual grandeur associated with Ottoman military pageantry. The second figure portrays a Turkish priest, likely a religious official associated with Islamic law and teaching. He is depicted in a more introspective and composed stance, wrapped in layered robes with fur trim and a large turban, signifying scholarly authority and spiritual rank. His costume emphasizes dignity and tradition, offering a striking contrast to the more dynamic and ceremonial presence of the standard bearer. Together, these prints beautifully illustrate the intersection of military symbolism and religious authority within Ottoman culture. The delicate engraving work, combined with original hand coloring, highlights fine details in textiles, textures, and posture. The wide margins and elegant engraved captions enhance their decorative appeal, making them ideal for display as a balanced pair in both classical and contemporary interiors. This is an original 17th-century engraving, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The map is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only. Condition: Overall in very good condition for age, with gentle age toning to the paper, occasional light spotting, and minor edge wear consistent with handling. Plate marks are visible, and impressions remain crisp. The original hand coloring is well preserved. Framing tips: These prints are particularly effective when framed as a pair in dark walnut or ebonized frames with wide ivory mats. For a lighter interior, a natural wood frame with warm white matting enhances the softness of the paper tone. Hang side by side with equal spacing for a clean, gallery-style presentation.
