Created by the accomplished German engraver Johann Martin Bernigeroth, this portrait reflects the period’s fascination with diplomatic figures and the rich visual language of Ottoman court culture. The composition presents the ambassador in an oval format, framed within a structured engraved border. He is shown in elaborate Ottoman attire, including a tall ceremonial headpiece, a richly textured and fur-lined robe, and a finely patterned garment beneath. In his right hand he holds a fan, adding a sense of character and gesture to the otherwise formal portrait. Bernigeroth’s engraving is notable for its precision and tonal clarity, particularly visible in the detailed rendering of textiles, fur, and facial expression. The inscription below identifies the sitter and his role as “Turkish Grand Ambassador at the Emperor’s Court,” emphasizing the diplomatic context of the image. Such portraits were often produced as part of series documenting notable international figures, reflecting the growing European interest in global politics, trade, and cultural exchange during the 18th century. Johann Martin Bernigeroth (1713–1767) was a respected engraver known for his portraits of scholars, nobility, and dignitaries. His works are valued for their clean linework and refined composition, and remain collectible examples of German printmaking of the period. This engraving combines strong decorative appeal with historical depth, making it particularly suitable for collectors of Ottoman-related material, diplomatic history, and 18th-century portrait prints. The oval format and balanced composition also lend themselves well to elegant interior display. Interior mockups shown are for visual inspiration only and do not represent the exact scale. We do not sell reproductions, only original works of art over 100 years old. Condition: Good antique condition with age-related toning and scattered foxing. Visible edge wear and minor paper irregularities, including small losses and signs of previous mounting at the corners. Overall stable and suitable for framing. Framing tips: This piece benefits from a wide ivory or warm off-white mat to balance the composition and soften the aged paper tone. A dark wood or black frame enhances contrast, while a subtle gilt frame can emphasize its 18th-century character and decorative richness.
