The “giraffe tablet” floor lamp, designed and produced by rispal in france circa 1950, stands as a sculptural and highly functional icon of mid-century french design. With its rare combination of elegance, craftsmanship, and innovation, this lamp transcends its utilitarian purpose to become a true design statement, equally suited to refined private interiors or curated gallery environments. This exceptional piece features a beautifully balanced composition of materials: a solid teak wooden frame, meticulously crafted and elegantly arched in rispal’s unmistakable “giraffe” silhouette, paired with a black-lacquered metal base that provides both structural integrity and visual contrast. Integrated into the composition is a refined built-in teak finished plywood table, seamlessly merging form and function, a hallmark of modernist thinking. The design’s sculptural integrity is matched by its technical sophistication. A braided fabric electrical cord, carefully woven through the wooden frame, demonstrates the level of detail and craftsmanship that rispal was known for. The original shade design has been faithfully preserved in the newly recreated shade, maintaining the aesthetic purity of the original while ensuring functionality. The wooden elements have been lightly refinished to enhance their natural beauty while preserving the warm patina and authenticity of the aged teak. The electrical system has been fully rewired, guaranteeing safe operation without compromising the vintage character. When illuminated, the lamp casts a soft, atmospheric glow, its dual e27 bulb configuration (up to 60 watts per bulb) offering both ambient and task lighting. The elegant arc of the “giraffe” form is not merely decorative, it creates a unique lighting experience, bathing its surroundings in warmth while serving as a sculptural focal point. Rispal, one of the most visionary french lighting houses of the 1950s, earned international acclaim for its organic and futuristic forms, especially through pieces like the celebrated “praying mantis” and “giraffe” lamps. Today, these rare originals are coveted by collectors, architects, and design connoisseurs worldwide, appreciated not only for their beauty but also for their groundbreaking role in mid-century lighting design. This lamp has been carefully cleaned and tested in our own atelier and is ready for international use, including in the usa. Upon request, we can supply a us-compatible plug, or the lamp may be used with a standard voltage converter for lamps with built-in transformers.
