Polychrome woodblock print (nishiki-e). Signed and sealed within the plate. Edo period, mid-19th century. A refined and elegantly composed ukiyo-e woodblock print attributed to Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), depicting a sophisticated interior scene set within a traditional Japanese residence. At the heart of the composition, a richly dressed courtesan is seated behind partially opened sliding screens (shoji), framed by a vivid blue ground and flowering branches, likely suggesting a seasonal setting. Her elaborate coiffure, sumptuous layered kimono, and composed gesture emphasize her status within the pleasure quarters. In the foreground, three attendants animate the scene: one kneeling, one standing in a finely patterned robe, and another crouched on the engawa (veranda), all rendered with delicate linework and expressive yet restrained physiognomy. Their poses and gazes guide the viewer’s eye across the composition, creating a subtle narrative tension between interior and exterior space. To the left, an open view reveals a tranquil landscape with water, distant shoreline, and blossoming trees, offering a lyrical contrast to the structured interior. The architectural framing—tatami flooring, sliding panels, and decorative borders—demonstrates the artist’s mastery in balancing spatial depth with ornamental design. The print exemplifies the refined aesthetics of the Utagawa school, where depictions of bijin (beautiful women) and genre scenes were elevated through rich color, intricate textile patterns, and carefully orchestrated compositions. The impression shows visible age and handling wear, including: moderate fading of pigments, particularly in lighter areas surface soiling and scattered stains wear along the margins and border elements minor abrasions and areas of pigment loss The verso shows overall toning and discoloration, consistent with age. Condition: Fair to good, with strong visual presence despite wear. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
