Polychrome woodblock print (nishiki-e), triptych. Signed in the plate and sealed within the composition. Edo period, mid-19th Century. A refined and visually engaging ukiyo-e triptych by the prolific Edo-period master Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), depicting an intimate interior scene combining elements of bijin-ga (images of beauties) and yakusha-e (actor prints). The composition unfolds across three sheets, presenting a narrative moment within a domestic setting. At right, a standing male figure—likely an actor in theatrical guise—peers into the interior through a sliding screen, his expressive pose and sharply defined features characteristic of Kabuki portraiture. At center, a seated figure dressed in a boldly striped kimono turns in reaction, while at left a courtesan reclines gracefully, her elaborate garments rendered with intricate patterns and subtle color harmonies. The interior is richly detailed with period furnishings, including a floor lamp, textiles, and a painted screen adorned with blossoming branches, contributing to a sense of narrative depth and seasonal atmosphere. The artist’s masterful use of line and color—particularly the juxtaposition of strong blues, greens, and delicate flesh tones—demonstrates the maturity of late Edo-period woodblock printing. Kunisada, one of the most commercially successful designers of his time, was renowned for his depictions of Kabuki actors and fashionable women. His works often merge theatrical drama with scenes of daily life, as seen here, where gesture and costume convey both narrative tension and aesthetic refinement. Overall good condition for a triptych of this period, with visible vertical fold lines at the joins between sheets. Some fading, surface wear, and minor discoloration are present, along with light creasing and small imperfections consistent with age and handling. Colors remain generally clear and legible.
