This traditional Japanese kazaridana from the 1930s elegantly combines storage and display in one harmonious piece of furniture.
Dimensions: height 110 cm, width 90 cm, depth 31 cm.
The cabinet has a beautiful asymmetrical layout with open shelves and enclosed storage, creating an airy and balanced appearance. Its modest depth keeps the piece refined and easy to place, even in narrower spaces, entrance halls, dining rooms, or a calm shop or gallery setting.
What stands out immediately is the deep dark brown to almost ebony-toned wood, with lively grain patterns and a beautifully polished surface that gives the piece a rich and well-cared-for appearance. The slightly upturned top rail gives the cabinet an elegant silhouette, while the rounded uprights, soft transitions, and carefully finished framing create a smooth and refined overall look.
At the top is an enclosed compartment with four finely crafted sliding panels, each decorated with subtle carved motifs of birds, branches, and pine elements. At the lower left is a cupboard section with two recessed-panel doors, also carved with a design of birds and tree forms. On the right and through the centre, the open shelves create rhythm and lightness. These open sections are framed by small pierced side galleries and a finely carved openwork divider, while the lower drawer provides additional practical storage for smaller objects.
This kazaridana works especially well as a display cabinet for ceramics, lacquerware, small sculptures, tea utensils, ikebana, or other art objects, while serving just as well as a functional storage piece with character. The combination of open display space and enclosed storage makes it not only decorative, but also highly usable in everyday life.
The condition is very good. The cabinet presents as well cared for, sturdy, and functional, with a fresh appearance and a natural elegance that fits beautifully in both classical and more minimalist interiors.
A refined Japanese tana with strong lines, subtle carving, and a calm, stylish presence.
