This piece features a solid and stable structure made of thick bamboo canes, while the seat—crafted from finely worked cane and rattan—showcases the exceptional craftsmanship and refined aesthetic sensibility of Italian artisans. The seat design elegantly recalls the shape of classical upholstery, reinterpreted in a light and airy way through the use of slender, flexed canes. Along the edges, one can admire the gentle curvature of this “imaginary fabric,” which appears to drape over and partially conceal the stool’s legs. This effect is further enhanced by a central gathered detail, secured with rattan bindings, adding both structure and decorative sophistication. Stools of this type were typically found in Italian Riviera homes, embodying a relaxed yet highly sophisticated lifestyle. Their design reflects a process of reduction and refinement associated with iconic Italian designers such as Franco Albini, Franca Helg, Tito Agnoli, and others, whose work for Bonacina inspired a wide range of artisanal interpretations. This stool has undergone a professional conservative restoration, including a deep cleaning and treatment with specialized products to preserve its original color and time-earned patina.
