A large sculpture crafted from red clay sourced in sansepolcro, tuscany, shaped into a stylised fish form. The surface is intricately embellished with geometric elements, hammered textures, and circular relief motifs inspired by renaissance design. Each detail is meticulously handcrafted, showcasing maestro mengoni’s unparalleled skill in the abborchiato technique. Inlaid sections and precise detailing highlight the elegance of this art form. The sculpture features a luminous finish of pure 24kt gold, applied with the terzo fuoco ( third firing) technique. The surface is manually antiqued with a secret natural blend infused with sandalwood ash. A minimalist black pedestal allows the piece to visually “float” in space, though it can also be wall-mounted without the stand. The artist’s signature is engraved into the clay on the visible surface of the work. Gabriele mengoni, a master ceramist born in gubbio in 1970, hails from a city that has been a symbol of italian ceramic tradition since the renaissance. Throughout his career, he has dedicated himself to reviving and innovating ancient techniques, including lustre and abborchiato, to craft pieces that seamlessly blend tradition and modernity. Mengoni draws inspiration from the renowned mastro giorgio andreoli (intra, c. 1465–1470 – gubbio, 1555), refining the lustre technique to create distinctive metallic reflections. He has also revived and reimagined the crafting of coppe abborchiate ancient decorative bowls from gubbio—bringing new life to this 15th-century tradition. By merging historical techniques with contemporary design, mengoni creates works that range from decorative objects to large-scale sculptures. His ceramics are celebrated for their intricate detailing, innovative forms, and the use of precious materials. Mengoni’s artistry has been showcased in numerous national and international exhibitions, garnering acclaim from collectors and art critics alike. His collaborations with leading designers and artisans have further cemented his role as a bridge between the past and present of ceramic art. Today, mengoni is recognised as a key ambassador of gubbio’s ceramic tradition. His artistic journey is proudly represented and supported by deblona. About: the deblona brand was born in 2020 from a serendipitous meeting between entrepreneur moreno sagni and designer riccardo mei. Their shared passion for art and italian craftsmanship ignited a collaboration that set the stage for a bold new challenge. In a world moving at break-neck digital speed, they chose to go against the tide, to slow down, restoring value and prestige to an ancient craft and timeless art form. Because some things should never be forgotten, even if they seem distant from today’s fast-paced trends. Deblona embraces a different rhythm, one rooted in the mastery of artisans, creating in spaces of quiet reflection. Our brand is a tribute to the enduring traditions of craftsmanship, shaped by modern imagination and creativity. See less
