Dating from circa 1925, this is a fine example of the richly decorated plateel earthenware for which gouda became internationally renowned during the early twentieth century.

the vase stands 33.5 cm tall with a diameter of 17 cm and features a classic baluster form with a flared rim and pedestal foot. The entire body is lavishly hand-painted in the characteristic gouda style, with bold stylised floral medallions featuring six-petalled flowers in warm orange set against turquoise grounds, surrounded by elaborate scrollwork and foliate motifs in cream, yellow, deep brown-red, and black. The foot and rim are finished with concentric bands in turquoise, orange, and yellow. The interior and rim are glazed in black. Every surface is richly decorated, with no area left unadorned — a hallmark of the finest gouda plateel work.

plateelbakkerij zuid-holland was founded in gouda in 1898 and became one of the leading producers of dutch decorative pottery. The factory's art deco period work from the 1920s and 1930s is particularly prized for its exuberant colour palettes, intricate hand-painting, and bold graphic sensibility. Each piece was individually decorated by hand, making every vase unique.
