A striking pair of monumental ceramic table lamps designed by Aldo Londi, manufactured by Bitossi Ceramiche in Montelupo Fiorentino, Italy, for the Swedish lighting company Bergboms Belysningar AB during the 1960s. This Italian-Swedish collaboration produced some of the most sought-after ceramic lighting of the mid-century period, and these lamps are a particularly rare and desirable example.
Each lamp features a massive hand-thrown base in chamotte earthenware, composed of a cylindrical lower section in textured cream-coloured chamotte clay topped by a generous bulbous form finished in a rich, deep green glaze with a lively, tactile surface texture. The contrast between the raw, mineral character of the unglazed chamotte and the glossy depth of the green glaze is exceptional. Each lamp stands 54 cm tall with a diameter of 20 cm (base only, excluding shade). The original cylindrical fabric lampshades with claw fittings are included.
Aldo Londi served as creative director of Bitossi for over fifty years, and his ceramics are held in museum collections and avidly collected worldwide. Bergboms of Malmö was one of Sweden's most prestigious lighting manufacturers, and their collaboration with Bitossi resulted in pieces that perfectly married Italian artisanal warmth with Scandinavian functional elegance. Green-glazed examples from this partnership are considerably rarer than the more commonly seen gold, metallic, or Rimini Blue variants.
