A large, 36 cm tall majolica ceramic vase attributed to Eugenio Pattarino (Florence, 1885–1971), 1950s. An interesting example of postwar ceramic research, in dialogue with the experiences of Fantoni and Gambone.
The vase has a sculptural form with a bridge handle and abstract, primitivist-style decoration, decorated with textured polychrome glazes on a white background. Under the base, it bears the "E.P.F. Italy" mark with the model number "4055."
Made by the Florentine factory founded by Eugenio Pattarino in the late 1930s, this vase demonstrates a lesser-known but particularly significant aspect of his work: his exploration of modern sculpture and decoration. The form is constructed with evident sculptural sensitivity, derived from the artist's early training, and develops through an asymmetrical balance between body and handle, which assumes a structural rather than merely functional role.
The surface is characterized by thick, vibrant glazes, applied over a light, opaque ground, following a practice typical of postwar Florentine ceramics. The decorative language breaks away from figurative tradition to adopt an abstract lexicon, made up of elementary signs and primary color fields, reminiscent of archaic and primitivist influences. In this sense, the work fits into the climate of renewal in postwar Italian ceramics. This piece has an attribution mark,
