In her explicitly feminist practice she created playful work that celebrated the female form. A key facet of her oeuvre are her bulbous Nanas (French slang for "girls"), inspired by a friend's pregnancy, these colourful, shapely figures depict women dancing, leaping, and running, and symbolize the strength and joy associated with femininity and motherhood. The Nana figures were first large-scale sculptures made of paper mâché and later polyester and painted plaster, exhibited it the fountain of Paris Centre Pompidou short after the opening. By the late 1960s, Saint Phalle began integrating them in her two-dimensional work. At a time when feminism and the women s rights movement were gaining traction, Saint Phalle s Nanas reflected the shifting nature of women's representation: these figures are not sexualized, but instead reflect a playfulness and ease rarely seen in earlier depictions of women. The two prints are in limited edition of 2500, Nana Blanc is edition 1675 and Nana Noir is edition 1574. They are sold as individual items. See less
