Excellent meissen porcelain figurine: clown standing with his legs apart, his face painted white and his blue hair styled in an idiosyncratic hairstyle like animal horns with tips curving to the side, an oversized red and white spotted bow tie around his neck, dressed in a brown, baggy, stained, oversized tailcoat and brown and white checked, wide, slightly too short trousers, playing a much too small violin and swaying to the music. Based on a small, curved, stepped square base with bevelled corners, artist's signature 'ps 89' for the year of design on the back of the base. A series of circus figures by peter strang, the long-standing chief sculptor at the meissen manufactory, are an extraordinary homage to the colourful world of acrobats and magicians, full of movement and humour, handmade unique pieces with loving details, artfully painted. With their distinctive, expressive design language, they combine traditional porcelain art with contemporary expressiveness and poetry.
