Jean Xavier Ernest Elchinger, known as Jean Garillon (1898–1981), holds a special place in the Elchinger dynasty of ceramicists. The nephew of Léon Elchinger, he worked in the family workshops during the first half of the 20th century. A ceramist at a crossroads, he blended the traditional craftsmanship of the Soufflenheim potters with the modernity of the Art Deco movement. This pair of glazed earthenware bowls is a fine example of his work, which is similar in technique and appearance to traditional Alsatian pottery. It is rendered modern and artistic by the delicate application of a water-green glaze with striking transparency.
The bowls or trinket dishes are in good condition, with some signs of use visible. They are stamped on the bottom. These ceramic trinket dishes are the work of Jean Garillon.
