The subject is depicted in three-quarter bust, wearing a double strand of pearls, flat lace collar, dark silk dress, and a cross pendant — the hallmarks of aristocratic portraiture from the 1630s–1650s.Earlier research identified the subject via visual comparison as likely Amalia of Solms-Braunfels (1602–1675), wife of Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange and one of the most powerful women in the Dutch Republic. A heavily carved gilt acanthus Rococo frame with bold scrolling foliage at each corner and along every side, secondary egg-and-dart inner molding, and warm aged gilding with natural patina in the recesses. A period frame of this quality and scale is increasingly rare and commands significant value on its own. See less

The gilt frame shows appropriate age and wear consistent with a period piece — natural patina, minor gilt loss in areas, no structural damage. The carved detail remains crisp and well-defined throughout. Overall a strong example presenting very well. less
