Description:
A refined and dynamic equestrian composition by Henry Koehler, titled Green’s Offside Back Shot and dated 1981, this work captures the immediacy and elegance of polo with remarkable clarity and restraint.Executed in oil on paper laid on panel, the painting is composed with a confident, abbreviated hand—figures and horses rendered through fluid, decisive strokes that prioritize movement and rhythm over rigid detail. The cropped composition heightens the sense of proximity and action, drawing the viewer directly into the cadence of the game. Subtle tonal shifts and a warm, textured ground provide depth while allowing the figures to emerge with vitality and focus.Koehler, widely regarded for his equestrian and sporting subjects, developed a distinctive approach that balances painterly freedom with structural control. In this work, that balance is evident in the interplay between gesture and form, resulting in a composition that feels both spontaneous and composed.Presented in an ornate gilt frame, the painting gains an added layer of classical refinement. Its intimate scale lends itself beautifully to a curated interior—equally compelling as part of a layered mantel arrangement, within a study, or integrated into a sophisticated gallery wall.Labels to the reverse identify the work as Green’s Offside Back Shot, dated 1981, and note the medium as oil on paper on panel, further supporting its authenticity and context within the artist’s body of work.A compelling example of Koehler’s enduring engagement with equestrian themes, offering both narrative energy and quiet elegance.
Artist Biography
Henry Koehler (1927–2018) was an American painter best known for his distinctive depictions of equestrian and sporting subjects, particularly polo and horse racing.Educated at the Yale School of Fine Arts, Koehler developed a painterly approach that balanced traditional draftsmanship with a more expressive, gestural sensibility. His work often focused on capturing the immediacy of movement—horses and riders rendered with fluid, economical strokes that emphasize rhythm, tension, and form.Koehler’s career was closely associated with the world of polo, and he gained recognition for his ability to convey both the athleticism and elegance of the sport. His paintings have been exhibited internationally and are held in private collections, particularly among collectors of sporting and equestrian art.Rather than pursuing highly detailed or academic realism, Koehler favored a more interpretive approach, allowing gesture and composition to convey the energy of the scene. This gives his work a sense of spontaneity and refinement, distinguishing it within the broader tradition of 20th-century sporting painting.
He had illustrations published by The New Yorker, Town and Country, and Sports Illustrated.
His first exhibition was in 1961, and since then he has exhibited in over 60 venues in London, Paris, Dublin, Johannesburg and the United States.
His works are in the collections of the National Racing Museum in Saratoga and the National Horse Racing Museum in Newmarket. He has painted several commission portraits of well-known thoroughbreds
but prefers genre pieces depicting horse-racing, polo games, and hunting in the field with horses. He also does studies of jockey figures before and after their race; sensitive studies of jockeys before and after racing.
An July-October 2003 exhibition, Elegant Impressions of Turf and Field, was held at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, Saratoga Springs.
