c. 1790 Louis XVI oval table with marble top with white and grey veins. The wood is acajou and palissandre with rubbed varnish finish. There are bronze dores at top of legs and on the feet. The original bronze gallery around the oval top was replaced prior to this seller's purchase date of 1992 from Haetgnes Freres Antiquaires in the 11th arrondisement of Paris, France.
Sellers are private individuals who lived in Paris 1990 - 1993 and collected this table and two other pieces for sale with Chairish. The "flying table" was used to serve bedside coffee or tea, brought by the servants from the kitchen hence the name "flying table."
This gueridon is signed B. Molitor born in Allegmagne 1730. Bernard Molitor moved to Paris with his brother Michael in 1773. He received many honors. This is well-documented in "The Ebenistes (cabinet-makers) Parisienes (1795 - 1830) where Molitor "was certainly one of the grand cabinet-makers of his epoque, not just for the quantity of the commissions he received, but for the quality of his work."
Molitor's work can be found in the collections of the Musee du Louvre, the Malmaison, Musee Marmottan and the Mobilier National as well as many documented private collections.
The sellers do not have family to inherit these French antiques and must downsize. They are in Phoenix, AZ. Copies of documents from the dealer, Haetgnes Freres in Paris are available.
