This 49-inch lintel is hand-carved from solid teak and retains a significant amount of its original polychrome finish, featuring layers of distressed teal, gold leaf, and deep crimson pigments. The central block is particularly detailed, showcasing a sunburst or floral medallion encased in a geometric grid—a design meant to symbolize protection and auspiciousness for those passing beneath it.
The relief work along the sides features organic floral scrolls that have been beautifully softened by a century of environmental exposure. This piece is a "curator’s favorite" because it retains its original lead-alloy maker's mark or structural plaque on the left side, adding an extra layer of industrial provenance to its folk-art soul. It serves as a commanding horizontal anchor, perfect for adding a pop of historical color to a mantle, headboard, or as a structural-style header above a window.
As an authentic architectural salvage piece, "The Polychrome Frieze" is presented in its Original Antique Condition. It displays an exceptional "earned character," featuring heavy pigment distress, natural wood oxidation, and historical surface fissures. The presence of original joinery notches and the aged metallic plaque are essential markers of its 19th-century authenticity.
