A commanding bald eagle, captured mid-call, with a second eagle soaring in the distance.
This signed oil on canvas by Lynn Chase, dated 1980, depicts a bald eagle in close profile perched among spare, thorned branches. In the background, a second eagle stretches across the sky in full wingspan.
The setting is distinctly coastal—an environment where eagles thrive. The open sky and minimal landscape keep the focus on the birds. The eagle itself is rendered with careful attention to detail. Fine brushwork defines the white plumage, while the darker feathers are built up in layered, overlapping strokes. Set against the open sky, the composition feels both grounded and expansive.
Lynn Chase (1948–2025) was an American artist, designer, and wildlife conservationist. She began painting under the guidance of her grandmother, Polly Jennings, and later graduated from Bennett College and the New York School of Interior Design. After working with decorator Elizabeth Draper, she turned her focus to painting, inspired by wildlife and the landscapes of Africa. By the age of thirty, her work had been exhibited in galleries from New York to London. In 1988, she founded Lynn Chase Designs, known for its richly detailed animal motifs across textiles and tabletop.
The bald eagle, painted in 1980 before she moved into design, this piece shows Lynn Chase working squarely as a painter. You can already see the clarity and sense of composition that would carry into her later work.
A strong and distinctive piece for a study, library, or coastal interior—equally at home in a traditional or collected setting.
