This fabulous, large abstract landscape,"Red Sky at Night". is an original oil on Belgian linen, hand-stretched and gessoed by the … Read more This fabulous, large abstract landscape,"Red Sky at Night". is an original oil on Belgian linen, hand-stretched and gessoed by the artist, Robert Baranet (1925-2001), in his 18th century barn in Connecticut where he maintained a studio for 36 years. It was inspired by a trip to Arizona to visit his son there, where Baranet was struck by the vibrant landscape. Robert Baranet graduated with high honors from The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, where he was a native. He also studied at the famed Barnes Foundation in Merion, PA, at the personal invitation of Dr.Albert Barnes himself, as well as The Grand Chaumier, Paris. Baranet was a friend of Mark Rothko during his (Baranet's) stint painting portraits at his studio at the Hotel des Artistes on Central Park West in the 1960's and 70's, and this work was clearly influenced by Rothko. 40" x 2" x 30".
