A highly collectible example of the traditional Afar jile (also spelled gile), a distinctive short sword–dagger from the Horn of Africa. Originating from the Afar people of Ethiopia and neighboring regions, this iconic form is characterized by its long, slightly curved double-edged blade and symbolic T-shaped hilt.
The blade is forged in steel and paired with a carved handle—wrapped and accented with metal—terminating in the characteristic transverse pommel. It is housed in its original wooden scabbard, bound in leather and richly decorated with brass wirework. The piece retains its original belt, enhancing both its authenticity and display appeal.
Beyond its practical use, the jile holds deep cultural significance, serving as a marker of identity, status, and tradition among the Afar.
Both utilitarian and ceremonial, it stands as one of the most recognizable weapons of the region, related in form to the Arabian jambiya.
