Alexander Weise (b. 1883-1960) a listed artist, known for vast landscapes of European alp settings, this example has an extremely masterful sense of subtle light and atmosphere. This is a very large example of his work, measuring 24” x 32” without the original period correct frame, (39.5” x 32” with frame)
His paint application, shows careful understanding of viscosity, a texture present indicating directionality of the mountain range in a sculptural way, carefully considered and confident, (not a hapless platte knife painting) The sky showing subtle pale changes.
This is truly a wonderful, skilled example of a landscape, signed lower left, not dated, likely painted around 1930-1945, and likely in Austria, though the artist did travel from Russia to France, painting alp mountain ranges an Italian Dolomites.
