This vintage mid-century modern iron rod side chair is exactly the kind of piece that serious collectors of American MCM design love to find — a chair that does everything with almost nothing, in the best tradition of Paul McCobb's iconic iron furniture for Arbuck. McCobb, one of the most celebrated and collected American designers of the 1950s, was a pioneer in using black enameled iron rod as a primary furniture material, creating chairs of lean, architectural beauty that remain touchstones of the genre.
The design is a study in precision: four angled iron rod legs, minimal cross-bracing, a black vinyl seat cushion of generous depth, and a gray salt-and-pepper tweed back pad floating on two vertical rods at an ergonomically considered recline angle. Every element is exactly what it needs to be and nothing more. The contrast between the industrial black iron frame and the warm texture of the gray tweed is particularly appealing — a material dialogue that gives the chair far more presence than its minimal silhouette might suggest.
