Intervention No.88: The " The Q Dynasty Chest"
A Masterful Dialogue Between Eras
The Concept:
"Intervention No. 88" represents a meticulous bridge between 19th-century architectural history and contemporary restoration. This is not merely a piece of furniture; it is a curated assemblage—a "marriage" of authentic Qing Dynasty soul and mid-century functional form.
The History:
At the heart of this chest are four exceptional, high-relief hand-carved panels. Salvaged from 19th-century Chinese architectural screens, these solid wood carvings pre-date the chest itself by nearly a century. They depict intricate tales of court life, pavilions, and ancient landscapes—carved with a depth and "undercutting" technique that has largely vanished in modern craftsmanship.
The Intervention:
Each panel has undergone a complete restorative gilding process. By reviving the gold against the traditional cinnabar-red ground, the "Dynasty Q" Chest reclaims its original intended vibrance. The intervention highlights the three-dimensional storytelling of the figures, bringing 150-year-old tool marks back into the light of a modern interior.
